Peterborough is an established manufacturing centre with specialist companies able to provide services, such as small-run precision injection moulding, suited to the production requirements of our highly detailed models. This makes possible the use of innovative approaches in the limited-series manufacture of high precision working railway models. Indeed, Northern Fine Scale was the first company to produce plastic injection moulded "British outline" (British railway style) Gauge 1 rolling stock kits.
All Northern Fine Scale models comply with the G1MRA (Gauge One Model Railway Association) standard scale of 10 mm to 1-foot (1:30). This is one of the largest scales used for standard and narrow gauge models. Gauge 1 permits the use of locomotives and rolling stock on a wide variety of layouts.
Gauge 1 railway modelling uses track with a gauge of 1 3/4" (44.45 mm) and is appropriate for scale models of standard gauge locomotives and rolling stock. Gauge 1 is especially popular for "British outline" models. In addition, Northern Fine Scale wagons are perfectly compatible with the slightly smaller (1:32) locomotives from such manufacturers as Aster.
Northern Fine Scale offers a range of highly detailed and historically accurate rolling stock kits and components at a reasonable cost. Ready-to-run units are also available. Northern Fine Scale products are made in Canada and available world-wide. The range is constantly being added to with plans in hand for a series of coaches.
Known as the Premier Gauge, Gauge 1 was, until the 1920's, the smallest and most popular model railway gauge. However, its place in the market declined as the world discovered Gauge 0, Gauge 00, and then Gauge H0. By the late 1940's Gauge 1 was a rarity, but the formation, in 1947, of the Gauge One Model Railway Association halted the decline. There was modest growth during the 1950's and 1960's. In 1976 interest increased when the Aster company from Japan introduced the first commercial "British outline" steam locomotive marketed since 1939. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the popularity of Gauge 1 and the numbers of people world-wide enjoying this wonderful and versatile form of railway modelling have climbed into the tens of thousands.
Gauge 1 is truly the scale where railway modelling meets model engineering. It is a realistic choice for both indoor and garden running. Although live steam traction is extremely popular, electric powered locomotives are fast gaining in popularity. To this end, all Northern Fine Scale rolling stock is built to be fully 2-rail compatible and features insulated wheels with polystyrene hubs and steel-tyres.
Note that the 1:32 scale makes Gauge 1 nearly three times the size of the Gauge H0 of today.
Because of the relatively large size of Gauge 1 locomotives, they can be built as live steam models. They are usually fired by gas or methylated spirit (denatured ethanol) or methyl hydrate. An increasingly popular alternative is coal, which brings back the unforgettable sulphur and soot smell of a coal-burning locomotive.
It is easy to become involved in Gauge 1 railways, and Northern Fine Scale supplies parts and complete kits suited both to the newcomer, and the advanced builder.
